Invest East Yorkshire, Invest Hull and Visit Hull and East Yorkshire are proud to celebrate English Tourism Week (15-24 March 2024) highlighting our diverse, exciting and vibrant sector in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
This annual campaign raises awareness of the industry and the mission to champion Tourism as a key sector within the region.
Did you know?
In 2019, the UK welcomed 40.8 million international visitors, but this number drastically fell to 11.1 million in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, there was a significant recovery in 2022, with 31.2 million overseas visitors, marking a 388.7% increase from 2021. Overseas visitor spending also saw a rebound, with £26.5 billion spent in 2022, nearly returning to the pre-pandemic levels of £28.4 billion in 2019.
To support the rebound and help local tourism businesses gain some of that value, Invest East Yorkshire and Invest Hull are pleased to offer three complimentary online workshops tailored to Hull and East Riding’s visitor-oriented businesses. The workshops are designed to focus on marketing tools and techniques aimed at enhancing the visibility and awareness of businesses to their clientele.
The development of these workshops was conducted in partnership with Susan Briggs, a renowned figure in tourism marketing with over three decades of experience. Susan brings a wealth of practical, tested advice to each workshop, ensuring participants leave with definite action points and heightened confidence in marketing their business efficiently, avoiding unnecessary expenditure of time and money.

The Government has approved a freeport tax site in Goole, in a move which will stimulate further major investment within the Humber region.
The tax site, which forms part of the wider Humber Freeport, spans almost 500 acres of prime development land across two plots, separated by the M62 motorway, on the outskirts of the East Yorkshire town.
The proposed footprint for the Goole tax site was submitted for approval in August last year. Now the site has been officially designated, following review and approval by the Treasury and HM Revenue & Customs.
It means businesses investing within the tax site can benefit from a series of advantages, ranging from business rate and stamp duty land tax relief, to National Insurance support designed to reduce employment costs.
Humber Freeport Chair Simon Bird welcomed approval for the Goole tax site.
He said: “Designation of the Goole tax site is another major positive step forwards for Humber Freeport and our mission to drive economic growth, generate thousands of skilled jobs, support innovation and promote cross-sector collaboration. “We strongly believe our freeport proposition in the Humber is a compelling and unique one, with huge opportunities in decarbonisation, advanced manufacturing, chemicals and port-related operations. “We’re offering investors the opportunity to benefit from the Humber’s status as a global gateway, with easy access to mainland Europe and beyond via the UK’s busiest ports complex. “We’ve got the space to grow, the people, the skills and the world-class companies already here to support investors, making the Humber the perfect place to do business.”

Humber Freeport aims to capitalise on the Humber’s vital role as a strategic asset for UK Plc as Britain’s global gateway, by attracting large-scale inward investments creating thousands of new jobs.
Designation of the Goole tax site will support the delivery of one of the region’s largest investments.
Leading property developer Wykeland Group holds the long-term development rights to the 211-acre northern part of the Goole tax site and Wykeland has exchanged on a deal with Finnish tissue paper manufacturer Metsä Tissue.
Subject to planning approval, Metsä Tissue will invest hundreds of millions of pounds to create the UK’s largest tissue paper mill on the site.
The facility is proposed to be built in several phases over the next few years. It will create more than 400 jobs, with thousands of additional indirect jobs generated across the supply chain and in the local economy.
Dominic Gibbons, Managing Director of Hull-based Wykeland, said: “Confirmation of freeport tax status for the Goole site is excellent news for Goole and the wider Humber. “The freeport tax site benefits added to the attractiveness of the proposition for Metsä Tissue. “They also underline the appeal of the wider Goole site, paving the way for further large-scale development delivering economic growth, new jobs and wide-ranging community benefits.”

The southern part of the Goole tax site is owned by St John’s College, Cambridge, which has appointed HBD, part of Henry Boot, as Development Partner.
Goole has become a magnet for inward investment in recent years, with the freeport tax site designation underlining the appeal of a location with excellent transport links via road, rail and the UK’s premier inland port.
Siemens Mobility is at the forefront of the town’s rejuvenation, with an investment of up to £200m in a rail manufacturing facility, adjacent to the freeport tax site, where tube trains for London’s Piccadilly line will be built.
The manufacturing facility will employ up to 700 people, generating around 1,700 new employment opportunities in the supply chain, and is the centrepiece of a growing rail village encompassing manufacturing, servicing and research and development facilities.
The southern part of the Goole tax site presents an opportunity to create an integrated supply chain alongside the Siemens Mobility rail centre of excellence and the neighbouring Guardian Glass factory.
The site has the potential to unlock a wealth of high-quality employment opportunities, particularly within the rail, advanced manufacturing and low carbon energy sectors.
Goole is also seeing major investment in its housing stock, with housebuilder Beal Homes investing £210m in The Greenways development of 800 homes – one of the region’s largest current residential schemes – as well as in its public facilities, with Government funding directed through the Goole Town Deal.
Goole is one of three Humber Freeport tax sites, alongside Hull East and the Able Humber Port at Immingham.
Other companies that have announced plans to invest on Humber Freeport sites include rare earth exploration company Pensana and green hydrogen specialist Meld Energy, both at Saltend Chemicals Park within the Hull East tax site.

Our experienced business advisers are available to work with rural business owners to help them identify projects that will help their business to grow and improve and understand what sort of grants they might be eligible for. Eligible business owners can apply for up to 50 per cent of the total cost of their project.
Through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Rural England Prosperity Fund, rural businesses can access revenue grants of up to £5,000 that can be used to help cover anything from attendance at events to marketing costs. There are also grants of up to £10,000 for small scale capital expenditure projects, which could include things like the purchase of machinery or improvements to retail premises. Larger capital expenditure grants of up to £50,000 are available if a project is capable of delivering significant economic impact, which would need to be demonstrated as part of the application process. This could include the creation of jobs, significant supply chain development or an increase in tourism accommodation in rural areas.
Grants can’t be used to cover general day-to-day costs, such as rent, staffing, utility bills, buying stock or for core farming activities and expenditure. Projects can’t be funded retrospectively; grant funding must be approved before a project begins.

Leading Finnish tissue paper manufacturer Metsä Tissue has announced plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in Goole over the next decade in a move that’s expected to create thousands of jobs.
Part of the Metsä Group, Metsä Tissue has chosen Goole as the site for its new state-of-the-art tissue paper mill, which will be the largest in the UK, significantly reducing the quantity of tissue products that are imported into the country each year. More than 400 new jobs will be directly created by the proposed facility, as well as thousands more across the supply chain and the local economy.
The planned development is set to become the first major investment in Goole’s proposed Freeport Tax site, which forms part of the Humber Freeport and aims to accelerate inward investment in the region.
Built in several phases over the next ten years, it will harness the very latest sustainable production technology and have the capacity to produce 240,000 tonnes of tissue paper.
Esa Kaikkonen, CEO of Metsä Tissue, said: “Goole is the perfect location for this proposed investment. The Humber region provides a crucial gateway to the whole of the United Kingdom and the region’s ambitions to bring cutting-edge green technology and jobs to the UK matches our ambitions in clean, sustainable manufacturing.
“We are delighted to announce our plan to invest in a world-class production site in Goole. This exciting investment would bring the UK and Finland together, combining the sustainable raw material of fresh wood fibres grown in the Nordics with the world-class local production of quality tissues in the UK. We are thrilled about how these plans can contribute to more sustainable local tissue production in the UK, offering alternatives to the currently imported tissue products. The project will significantly enhance Metsä Tissue’s presence in this country and underscores the importance of the UK market to our business in the years ahead.”
Metsä Tissue has set a target for all of its products to be manufactured from fully fossil fuel-free raw materials by 2030 as part of the drive to achieve a net zero society. It’s also aiming for all of its mills, including the new Goole facility, to operate without the use of fossil fuels by 2030.
Subject to securing the necessary planning permission and a final investment decision, the proposed site will occupy an area of around 200 acres and serve both the professional and consumer markets.
