SPT Hotel and Catering

Business growth and development often involves taking a few risks, but it also involves identifying new and emerging opportunities on which to capitalise.

They say that necessity is the mother of invention, after all, and it seems that the pandemic proved to be just the inspiration that one company needed to diversify their product offering, while helping others navigate the increasingly challenging circumstances of the global healthcare crisis.

SPT Hotel & Catering recognised in 2020, mid-pandemic, that there was an increasingly urgent need for the hospitality sector to do more to protect the health of employees and guests.

As such, research was carried out into what benefits air purifiers could deliver – and the results gave the company the confidence it needed to enter into a UK distribution agreement with AIRVIA Medical over its AIRVIVA AERO 100 and the AIRVIA Pro 150.

In need of a helping hand, company director Steve Tradewell got in touch with the Invest East Yorkshire business services team for guidance and support relating to funding.

With our advice, the company received European Regional Development Funding from the #GrowMySME programme of 40 per cent towards the creation of a comprehensive ecommerce website and 40 per cent towards a targeted digital marketing campaign, which ran for three months.

SPT Hotel & Catering now promotes its range of air purifiers to greater effect online, as the extra investment into the website has, for example, meant online payments for the units can be accepted.

Mr Tradewell said:

“Every step of the way the business team has been tremendous – from filling and checking the forms, to being submitted. They made sure they understood what our business is about, what our plans are and what grants were available to us.”

Beverley Bookshop

The global pandemic has certainly been a challenging time for us all, but especially for high street businesses that were forced to shut up shop for months on end, thanks to the lockdown restrictions introduced around the country to help prevent the spread of covid.

The situation demanded a lot of financial support for businesses from the government in order for them to keep head above water – and one such enterprise that benefited from East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Love Your High Street Fund was The Beverley Bookshop, owned and run by Lucy Rawnsley.

The bookshop itself is something of a Beverley institution, having traded in the market town’s high street for almost 21 years!

Ms Rawnsley got in touch with the Invest East Yorkshire business support team and received a grant from the Love Your High Street fund, which she went on to use for a a rebrand and refurbishment, including improving the lighting, accessibility for wheelchairs, reorganising the store layout, and an external and internal repaint.

She had this to say about working with the team:

“I was guided through it by one of the council’s business advisers, who was very helpful and encouraging. I am delighted with the finished refurbishment [to the shop].

“We had a very clear vision of what we wanted to provide for our customers and they are hugely complimentary about it. I feel that we have improved what is on offer on the high street and by now being The Beverley Bookshop, our hope is to provide for our local community for many years to come.”

The Love Your High Street fund from East Riding of Yorkshire Council offered businesses, organisations and local towns and parish councils 100 per cent grants of up to £10,000 (subject to meeting eligibility criteria) during the pandemic.

Clay10 Creative

When it comes to the growth and development of a business, one of the most important aspects absolutely has to be networking. It’s all about building relationships and doing this successfully can see you break into new markets, find new demographics and find new and exciting collaborative opportunities with other brands out there.

This, it seems, is the story for Clay10 Creative, a Hessle-based design agency at the very forefront of innovative marketing, using immersive technology to create unforgettable design and experiences.

The team at Clay10 work locally across all industries and have helped grow businesses and attract new talent to the region through projects such as: Designing digital models for Siemens Mobility – helping illustrate the scale of their new train manufacturing facility in Goole through animation, videography and Augmented Reality. Developing apps that educate users, collect data and help simplify reporting and spot trends for AAK. Producing a range of promotional videos for Ideal Boilers, highlighting the range of products they have on offer.

With the support of the Invest East Yorkshire business services team, the company joined local networks, including Team Humber Marine Alliance and being based at the ergo business centre, Clay10 have been able to strengthen their connections with the renewable energy sector. They were also supported through ICT grants from The Supply Chain Network and also enjoyed working in partnership with Catapult and the Aura Innovation Centre, promoting innovation within digital communications.

So successful has their networking strategy been, Clay10 has been able to scale up its premises after expanding its workforce, taking on more space within the ergo Business Centre, the hub for renewables and the environment at the heart of the UK’s energy estuary.

As such, Clay10 Creative is immersed in the culture of the Humber region and surrounded by cross-sector innovation. The agency, which specialises in digital tools and marketing communications, has a passion for showing businesses what opportunities embracing digital technology can open up.

Director Luc Clayton had this to say of their success thus far: “Whether you’re already living the digital life or trying to avoid it – there is no hiding away from the benefits of a digital approach. The recent covid-19 pandemic really pushed a lot of companies out of their comfort zone and forced them to embrace digital communications sooner than they would have usually done.

“We’ve had great support from local networks – from connecting us with people looking for help to letting us know about new developments in the region. We are always keen to explore how digital solutions can help our clients and their customers.”

Highfield House

Make your way to Driffield in East Yorkshire and you’ll find the stunning Grade II-listed Highfield House, an Arts and Crafts property first built in the late Victorian period.

It was bought back in 2015 by Andy and Lindsey Lampard, who took it upon themselves to transform it into a viable and thriving business, really revamping it, bringing it up to date and making the investments required to turn it into the perfect events and hospitality space.

Of course, refurbishing an older property is often easier said than done – and they can turn into a money pit quite quickly… so it’s best to be prepared and do some research into the different funding opportunities available to help turn dreams into a reality.

The couple had already invested a significant amount of money into Highfield House before they got in touch with the Invest East Yorkshire business services team to find out more about the help available to them.

Our growth hub adviser Darren Roberts worked alongside the pair to scope out the remaining work needed including new guest accommodation to cater for larger parties and a new commercial kitchen to allow them to prepare food onsite instead of having to bring in outside caterers at additional cost.

Darren helped them understand what they needed to do and the benefits to the business of different scenarios and then supported them with a successful application for a tourism grant in 2019 which has allowed them to make the major changes they had planned.

Mr Lampard spoke glowingly of the support and guidance they received, saying: “There’s so much that these guys can do for you, if you look into it, and now that we’ve been successful with one grant, we’re now looking to undertake a couple of others.”

Our House Estate Agents

Local estate agents passionate about customer care

“Steph originally contacted the Invest East Yorkshire team through the East Riding Council website early in February 2020 asking for support to write a business plan for her new business venture.”

Steph had worked in local estate agents previously and was passionate about customer care and providing a level of service that she felt could not be rivalled.

Committed to this end she has joined the NAEA Property Mark and is working towards her level 4 Fellowship in the Sale of Residential Property. Shortly before the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020 she had identified and viewed a number of properties in which to house her new business, in her beloved home town of Hornsea.

After an initial discussion over the telephone with a Business Support Advisor it was identified that as well as help with completion of a business plan and financial forecast to test the viability of the business proposal, she was eligible to receive: detailed information about starting up a new Estate Agents; links to the government backed Business Enterprise Fund for a Start Up Loan; access and support to apply for the ‘Love Your High Street Fund’; registration for the Humber Business Growth Hub programme of support including focused workshops as well as an ICT Start-up grant to help her to purchase and install essential IT equipment needed to operate her business. As the country descended into COVID-19 lockdown, Steph also received advice and direction about the additional support available through her advisor as well as through the Invest East Yorkshire electronic weekly updates.

All of the information was compiled and sent by email so that Steph could digest and process each element at her own pace, giving her space to formulate questions and conduct any further research needed. Steph’s passion and motivation meant that after release of the initial information, she was able to progress many of the identified elements herself.

Continued Support

The Invest East Yorkshire team continue to support Steph as her business continues to develop and will do so for as long as Steph wants or needs it. She has successfully applied for and received a ‘Love Your High Street’ grant of 10k which has enabled her to secure a lease on a high street property in Hornsea, complete essential works to the exterior and interior and to essentially ‘open for business’. The photographs say it all.

As well as employing herself as the Managing Director and Valuer, Steph has been able to open for business with Maddie Lancaster as ‘Lettings Manager’. Within just six weeks of formally being open to customers, Steph is now in the process of employing another two staff, an assistant manager and an apprentice sales negotiator, with the intention of both posts being filled within the month. Her longer term goal will be to continue to expand, complete her training and continue to revel in her passion for delivering a high quality service, in her words, ‘everyone will leave the office with a smile’.

My husband and I initially decided to set up an Estate Agent’s in January 2020. Having never set up a business before and wanting to do it correctly, …Stacey has been amazing and guided me through a vast amount of information. We really can’t thank the team enough. The offices are looking amazing and we get so many compliments …together with our proactive marketing approach the business has really taken off. We have sold 11 properties in the first six weeks of trading which as a new estate agents is phenomenal. We are looking to take on three further members of staff before the end of the year.
